Protecting Your Business and Staff with Access Control

Many business owners throughout Las Vegas, NV, are looking for additional safety measures that can help protect their establishments. From retail operators experiencing an uptick in shoplifting and internal theft to restaurants looking to protect their staff and assets, most industries report needing to enhance their security.

If you’ve yet to install a commercial security system, you may wonder where to start. Today, smart security cameras and business alarms both play a vital role in providing protection. The place to start, however, is at the portals of entry—the first place thieves attempt to break in.

Here, we’ll explore how access control systems improve security and what a key card entry system offers your growing business.

Reducing Risks to Employees, Customers, and Assets

One of the main goals of a professional access control system is to protect staff and property from intrusion attempts. Whether a disgruntled ex-employee or a thief, the first line of defense is the entryway.

A key card entry system works by storing data on a magnetic layer on a card. Swiping or placing the card over a card reader verifies credentials and unlocks the user’s door. If the access control reader does not recognize the credentials, you and your administrators or security personnel will receive an alert that someone attempted an unauthorized entry.

The situation may warrant a lockdown, protecting those inside the building. However, it may also be a new employee arriving before they’ve been entered into the system. In this instance, an administrator pulls up the program and inputs the information in minutes. Because most systems are cloud-based, you can add, delete, or change access from anywhere.

This technology also lets you lock and unlock doors from anywhere using a mobile app. Should a vendor show up unexpectedly, you can unlock the door to give them access and lock it back up after they leave.

Restricting Sensitive Areas

Unfortunately, internal theft is a greater threat to businesses than external. The National Retail Federation reported that 2022 saw an average loss for an external theft incident of $1,063, while internal theft accounted for $2,180.

Key card entry systems can restrict access to sensitive business areas. This may be the office, storage areas, or rooms that contain valuable assets. You’ll receive a notification if an employee attempts to enter a restricted location.

You can also set schedules, allowing employees to enter the business only during specific hours. Generated reports give you the timestamp of every employee, letting you know what time they arrived and left.

Seamless Integration

As companies expand, so do their security issues and measures for control. An access control system integrates seamlessly with other components, such as alarms and video surveillance. The security camera zooms in when someone attempts to enter without the appropriate credentials. It sends you a video clip, giving you the necessary information to determine the correct action.
